Famous London restaurants: The Wolseley
The backstory: The grand café-restaurant on Piccadilly was originally built as a car showroom for Wolseley Motors Limited in 1921. Architect William Curtis Green drew on Venetian and Florentine influences with towering arches, pillars and stairways that still stand strong. Barclays acquired the building in 1927 before Chris Corbin and Jeremy King took over the site in 2003, restoring and renovating the prestigious space with the help of David Collins Architects.
Who goes there? A favourite with London's celebrity set, Kate Moss, Emma Watson and the Beckhams are regulars while Katy Perry, Madonna and Jake Gyllenhaal like to visit when they are in town.
What's on the menu? The lunch and dinner menu is extensive. Ask about the grilled fish of the day. Grilled Meats are also available. For a lighter option, eggs Benedict is served all day. An ice cream coupe is a must for dessert.
Cheque out: Expect to pay around £75 per head for a three-course dinner and drinks.
Can I book? Despite the restaurant's popularity there are tables available to book with ease at opentable.co.uk/the-wolseley. It is open until midnight, much to the joy of theatregoers.
