Sarah Brown: My footy cakes didn't score with Mary Berry

Sarah Brown has revealed she makes husband and former Prime Minister Gordon a football-themed birthday cake every year — but insisted it didn’t help her win the judges’ approval in a Comic Relief Bake Off special.

The health and education campaigner, 51, admitted she wasn’t the strongest baker and said picky judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry were as harsh as ever about her efforts.

She told the Standard: “My baking is basic. I guess my signature bake would be that I can manage a sponge or cupcakes at best.

“I make Gordon a football birthday cake every year - he is a big football fan and a life-long supporter of his local team Raith Rovers.

“In all honesty Gordon isn’t much of a cook or a baker either. But the children are. They are better than both of us.” Of her Bake Off experience, she added: “Paul and Mary didn’t go easy on us for being Comic Relief bakers, not at all.”

Stars taking part in the four-part Great Comic Relief Bake Off include Abbey Clancy, David Mitchell, Michael Sheen, Joanna Lumley and Chris Moyles. The four best from each episode will take part in a show aired on Red Nose Day, with one crowned champion.

Brown — founder of children’s charity Theirworld — said she supported Comic Relief as it was a thoughtful drive that changes lives, adding: “You can see first-hand the difference it makes.”

She called on Standard readers to support our Red Nose Day “Make Your Hair Funny for Money” campaign and sport a wacky hairstyle or wig on March 13 to raise funds for the organisation.

The Evening Standard Dispossessed Fund has joined forces with Comic Relief to raise money for Londoners in poverty. It is the fourth time the Fund has been a chosen beneficiary of the campaign and its partner Sport Relief.

The Great Comic Relief Bake Off starts tonight, BBC One, 8pm.
