World's first organic pub

With the Soil Association's national Annual Organic Week getting under way on Sat 4 Oct, now is the time to overindulge in organic food and drink. Islington boasts what was the world's first totally organic pub when it opened in 1998, with all food, beers, wines and spirits certified as organic.

Sister-pub to the Duke Of Cambridge, owned and operated by business partners Geetie Singh and Esther Boulton. As in Islington the menu changes daily (often twice) and reflects fresh, seasonal availability. There are more than 40 organic wines on the menu and draught beer delights include Freedom Organic, Pitfield Lager, Singhboulton Ale, St Peter's Best, East Kent Goldings Light Ale and Shoreditch Stout.

Highly successful organic resto

Aussie TV chef John Torode has one of the success stories of modern times with the ever-popular Smiths Of Smithfield eating and drinking emporium. He mainly uses fresh organic produce in the cooking, and sells the excellent Meantime brewery organic lager under Smiths' own label in the ground-floor bar and firstfloor cocktail bar.

Organic lagers from Germany

Small, trying-tobetrendy basement bar serving the Freedom organic ales. From the Freedom brewery's birthplace in Parson's Green, these beers are being produced by a third party in Germany, but there are high hopes that Freedom will make a return to the UK.
