Where to go this Easter

You wouldn't meet your mother in the same place as a lover - so each week we round up the right places for the right person. This week, we find the best pubs to go and spend a long leisurely Easter Weekend...

The Duke Of Cambridge

228 Battersea Bridge Road, SW11 (020-7223 5662). The London Harness Horse Parade sets off at noon on Easter Monday in Battersea Park and features a colourful display of working horses and their carriages. Afterwards head for this contemporary pub (a former Evening Standard Pub Of The Year) close to the west side of the park, where you'll be able to get a decent pint of ale and some fabulous home-cooked food.

The Brewmaster **

37 Cranbourn Street, WC2 (020-7836 1038). If you're heading for Central London and a trip to the museums or the theatre, you might be in need of a light libation afterwards. If Leicester Square is your ultimate destination, head for the recently refurbished Brewmaster pub. This is now an agreeable two-floored venue done out in mock-Victorian style. They serve three cask ales and a menu of grills and fries. Upstairs is the quieter bit.

Queen's **

49 Regent's Park Road, NW1 (020-7586 0408).
After a long, brisk walk across Regent's Park, climb to the top of Primrose Hill and the London skyline is laid out before you. The Queen's is a small, old-fashioned, two-roomed pub with a better than average food and drink offering. A small terrace on the upper level needs to be bagged early on warmer days.

The Mayflower

117 Rotherhithe Street, SE16 (020-7237 4088). After visiting the Cutty Sark, the Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory, Greenwich Park or whatever, it'll be time for a drop of something refreshing. The Mayflower is a pretty pub on the banks of the Thames that has seen little in the way of modernisation. Adorned with seafaring memorabilia, the pub boasts many original features including a lowbeamed ceiling and a cosy fireplace. In the spring of 1620 The Mayflower upanchored here and sailed down the Thames on the first leg of her historic journey to the New World.

The Anglesea Arms ***

15 Selwood Terrace, SW7 (020-7373 7960). If the museums of South Kensington are your destination this weekend, take the short walk to this early Victorian pub afterwards. There is a large saloon bar with an excellent selection of cask ales, and a restaurant at the back of the pub offering a modern British menu. A terraced forecourt with picnic tables is hugely popular on warmer days.
