Where to catch Tiger Tim

After all that hard work watching the tennis, you'll probably require some refreshment. Fortunately, Edward Sullivan has completed the arduous task of finding Wimbledon's finest pubs for you. Here he shares his top five - all of which have five-star ratings.

The Fire Stables *****
27-29 Church Street, SW19 (020-8946 3197)
This is the closest bar to the tennis courts at the All England Club, so expect it to be seriously busy over the next fortnight.
This once sleepy pub was given the gastro-treatment a few years ago and Wimbledon's yuppie brigade have been fans ever since. Expected to find posh nosh and a decent wine list.

Eclipse *****
57 High Street, SW19 (020-8944 7722)
Although the Eclipse chain of bars is synonymous with Sloaney Chelsea, its excellent offering of seriously good cocktails and sushi snacks have been replicated here. I hear it won a Merton Bar Of The Year Award (I imagine the competition was fierce). This is the sort of place you'd expect to find Timmy 'Twinkletoes' Henman consoling the other Brits as they fall by the way early on in the tournament.

The Rose And Crown *****
55 High Street, SW19 (020-8947 4713)
The Rose And Crown in Wimbledon Village is one of South London's great pubs. It dates from 1640 when Charles I still had his throne and his head. It is as pretty a pub as you could hope to find, a beautiful house of old brick, lovely in its proportions both inside and out. They serve Young's ales today, and there's a charming cloistered garden round the back.

The Common Room *****
18 High Street, SW19 (020-8944 1909)
The Common Room is a modern, glassfronted brasserie-style affair on the site most recently occupied by Utah. The atmosphere is very laid-back and a little bit mumsy on weekdays when children are welcome and a no-smoking area operates until 6pm. The rest of the time it's overrun with Wimbledon professionals. A good Mediterranean menu and international wine list makes this an essential port of call when in Wimbledon.

The Hand In Hand*****
6 Crooked Billet, Wimbledon Village, SW19 (020-8946 5720)
The Hand In Hand is in the tiny hamlet of Crooked Billet hard by Wimbledon Common. It's a pretty, traditional pub serving Young's ales and offering international food. There's a no-smoking area inside, but people tend to take advantage of the pleasant lawn at the front of the pub on summer days.
