As it happens, Ch?teau Haut-Brion did run experiments on screwcaps for 10 years back in the 1970s. "The main result," Jean-Bernard Delmas of Haut-Brion told me, "was that we did not see any differences during roughly 10 years. But after this period, a lot of screwcap bottles were oxidised. The film had lost its elasticity, was cracking and the wine was damaging the aluminium underlay." Based on this experiment, then, Bob might have to prepare for disappointment. And I still think wine-sodden cork smells divine.
