Pop goes Peru... ceviche is London's next big thing

Three's a trend - and this summer's Peruvian bar and restaurant boom is well surpassing that.

Whether Peruvian cuisine will bring you fond memories of plodding up Machu Picchu, or just helps you pretend you're a thousand miles away from London, you're sure to enjoy this often over-looked cuisine with all these new pop-ups, bars and restaurants.

With the deluge of Mexican food around at the moment, we're all ready to try something a little different. Some of the dishes, such as the unusual fare at Lima London, have rarely even been made for a London audience before.

For maximum enjoyment of their food and drink, Peruvians also recommend a 'paseo' - a traditional after dinner walk - to aid digestion and clear the head of too many Pisco Sours.

So ditch the tacos and tuck into some of these instead:

Ceviche

Reasonably-priced and much-lauded by Giles Coren, the bar is buzzing and there are seven different kinds of ceviche (a Peruvian delicacy of sliced fish fillets marinated in lime juice and chillies) to try out.

Lima London

Chef Virgilio Martinez, one of Peru's proudest exports, has arrived in London with much fanfair, promising food you're unlikely to have ever tasted before. Every bit as chic as its Soho's counterpart Ceviche, there is also a beautifully designed dining room to admire. The food is experimental, with a wide range of chilies used, so best tried with an open mind.

Sushi Samba

Expect stunning views from this unusual eating spot on the 38th and 39th floors of the Heron Tower. The international chain brings a unique combination of Peruvian, Japanese and Brazilian cooking and cocktails.

Asia de Cuba ceviche bar

As you might expect from the St Martin's Lane Hotell, this limited-run affair is stylish with a capital ‘S’. The menu is light and summery, including clever combos such as Scottish salmon and salted avocado helado, and snapper and confit watermelon. And to drink? It’s rum all the way – think Mojitos and speciality tipples to complement the freshness of the seafood. But be quick, this pop-up ends on July 25.

Tierra Peru

Sophisticated but laid-back, like its Islington clientele, Tierra Peru goes for a more traditional angle than its fellow class of 2012. Try the picante de mariscos – fresh seafood cooked in a traditional sauce.
