Mosimann's: Dining for lovers

Fed up of over-attentive waiters fussing at your table every time you take a sip of wine? Not interested in visiting restaurants to see and be seen? Would you rather fine food, fine wine and the company of your beloved in discreet surroundings? Then Mosimann's restaurant, in Belgravia, could have the answer: the world's smallest dining room.

Mosimann's, which is actually a private dining club (you have to be a member to eat there which costs £500 a year), has opened a three-metre by two-metre micro-restaurant, designed for the most intimate of meals a` deux.

Forget Conran-style canteen eating, this is a truly exclusive operation - and privacy is guaranteed.

Waiters appear only when summoned by a call button, the lights can be dimmed, there is air conditioning to extract smoke fumes and maintain a pleasant temperature, you can select your own music to suit the mood of the evening and the door can be locked by guests who prefer not to be disturbed over coffee.

Called the Montblanc room - it is sponsored by the luxury goods house - it contains a curved bench seat for two around a table. It can be rented for £100 a night (on top of the cost of the food, around £60 - £70 a head) by members and non members alike.

Mosimann's admit that several couples who have already tried the room have enjoyed slightly more than the food. Kirsty MacKay, event co-ordinator at the restaurant in West Halkin Street said coyly: "There have been some indiscretions by guests in the room. But what people do or don't get up to inside the room is their own business. Several couples who have booked it so far have asked not to be disturbed after their food has been served."

The room has been popular with couples, celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and other romantic dates. However at least one pair of high-powered executives has rented the room to discuss business safe from eavesdroppers.

Anton Mosimann, the proprietor, said: "We wanted to do something different. There is nowhere else in the world with a room like this, it has a very special feel." The room was the brainchild of Anton, who approached Montblanc for sponsorship. In return, the company's leather goods, pens and cufflinks are displayed in cabinets inside the room.

"It is something different and unique," says Anton, "I loved it from the first moment I saw it - everyone who has used it has too."
