About 90 per cent of Britain's pubs now offer food, accounting for about 40 per cent of the industry's turnover. Just 25 years ago, pub food beyond a packet of crisps and a pickled egg was virtually unknown in much of the country.
Reader response to the new Good Pub Guide, which is published tomorrow (£14.99), was also the basis for the guide's county dining pubs of the year awards.
A new text messaging system has been set up that claims to be able to guide you to a decent local serving good food. It works by texting goodpub or goodpub food to 85310. The nearest recommended pub is supplied at a charge of 50p.
