Hampstead's home of easy eating

Nestled between the shops that trickle along the bottom end of Hampstead High Street, The Crinnigan Rooms looks on first impressions as if it might be an upmarket pub.

With a reception bar to hold waiting customers, and a menu that offers traditional heartening fare, it?s a mistake that?s easily made. But while the restaurant offers a friendly atmosphere and intimate eating, it would be a mistake to dismiss it as a gastro pub without the ale.

The space is light and airy by day, but becomes a series of warm and inviting rooms when the nights draw in, making it a perfect place to hide away from the elements. The food is fairly simple and generally unpretentious. The menu is filled with solid, warming meals, though the fresh produce and ever-changing line up mean that there will always be something a little special available.

Starters are priced at around £5-7, with soups, mussels, scallops and a superb crispy duck salad could hold its head up high anywhere. The main courses on offer are solid and well presented, ranging from the light (a variety of fish dishes, around £10) to the sturdy (Aberdeen Angus steak with home-made chips, £14.50). The duck, once again, proved delicious ? this time served confit with a port sauce.

Desserts are traditional, filling options such as fruit crumble or chocolate cheesecake (most £5.50).

The Crinnigan Rooms doesn?t take on some of the snobbish airs that occasionally invade Hampstead?s better restaurants ? and the affordable prices and friendly atmosphere are a breath of fresh air for those looking for unfussy and relaxed eating.
