Today there are up to 180,000 Greek speakers in London, and 85 per cent of those come from Cyprus. Many left their country behind to find a better life in Britain, especially after the Turkish invasion of 1974. The Greek-Cypriot immigrants are poorer than their mainland counterparts, and as such settled down in more financially accessible parts of London such as Hackney, Haringey, Enfield Southgate. They moved to more upmarket areas such as Palmers Green and Woodgreen in North London when they were better off, and many Greek restaurants can be found in these areas of London.
