Five things Fay Maschler ate over the holiday
1. How advantageous it is to have publicans in the immediate family. Staying at my son Ben’s The Compasses near Tisbury in Wiltshire, in a room stylishly, Danishly decorated by his wife Jane, lovely dinner of slow-roast pork belly.
2. Andrew Clarke, one of my favourite chefs, is involved in Clapton’s biker hangout Jim’s Café, where after a Tony Conigliaro cocktail I eat meat loaf with onion gravy.
3. Turkey is a must at least once a year and it stars at my sister Beth’s happy Hampstead pub The Wells on Christmas Day.
4. At Frenchie, roasted cauliflower with dates, seeds and vadouvan spices is fabuloso, outshone only by scarce, eerily fine biodynamic Spanish wine Els Jelipins Vi de Taula 2011.
5. Resin sushi and an announcement of fresh uni (sea urchin) front the agreeably traditional Nagoya in George Street. Omakase sashimi seems suitably seasonally chaste.
