Best of the British joints

There's nothing quite like a Sunday Roast to hit the spot. Roast potatoes drenched in gravy, crispy Yorkshire pudding and a sumtuous prime cut of beef are hard to beat. But why do the cooking yourself, when these fabulous British restaurants can do it for you...

Monkeys, 1 Cale Street, SW3 (020-7352 4711).

Renowned for feathered game and clarets, the proprietor prefers to be kept out of guides and to keep Monkey's low-key for his 'intheknow' Chelsea and up-from-thecountry regulars. Atmosphere all very tinkle, tinkle, wah, wah, but immensely cute Mitford British - so not for the Marxism Today reader. Ave per head: £45.

Franklins, 157 Lordship Lane, SE22 (020-8299 9598).

Ace value, relaxed local, with wellsourced British ingredients forming the mainstay. The food has the feel of having been produced on a country house Aga with panache, pheasant comes braised with red cabbage and bacon, or stewed with calvados and apples. Lucky Dulwich to count this among its locals.

Boisdale, 15 Eccleston Street, SW1 (020-7730 6922).

Chef David Morey prides himself on his seasonal Scottish produce, so you will find wild strawberries, Scottish girolles mushrooms, rowan berries, as well as the more usual game and veg. Their beef is great, the atmosphere is unpretentious and lively.

Savoy Grill, The Savoy Hotel, The Strand, WC2 (020-7836 4343).

No complaints since Marcus Wareing's exceptional skills hit the kitchen, and they modernised the decor without stripping it of its Art Deco glory. Full of happy diners, feeding on a trad Brit menu, based on a fastidious belief in using seasonal indigenous produce. Go for the £25 set lunch, a bottle of house and tap water and you can do it for under £40.
