Bar of the Year

The Evening Standard has launched its search for the Pub and Bar of the Year - and your vote will help create the shortlist from the 10 contenders in each category.

Trading places with the dockers and sea merchants who once occupied this Grade I listed building, this shiny new bar and restaurant is now an integral - but independent - part of the Museum in Docklands. The bar boasts a spectacular range of international bottled beers and the excellent food is supplied by the Searcy's catering company.

Young, good-looking people on the Chelsea Beach - so named for its Mediterranean summer atmosphere - are this year heading in their droves for the venue-of-the-moment, Ad Lib. This is a louche, Moroccanstyle den with a delicate soundtrack of soulful funk, Latin and house grooves. Good cocktails.

BLACK SHEEP

After centuries of waiting, Crystal Palace finally has its own style bar. The Black Sheep, which opened just before Christmas, is a modern cafébar by day and a cocktail lounge in the evening. Good wines, great cocktails - a rollicking good venue.

This Latin-style deli, bar, restaurant and nightclub is decked out in the fashion of a classic cantina. Antique tiles line the walls and the bar has comfortable deep-mauve furnishings, and an anything-goes, laid-back vibe driven by a Brazilian resident DJ who spins his nottooloud Latin American stuff.

On the darker reaches of Battersea Park Road, Dusk is an achingly trendy cocktail bar full of painfully good-looking young folk - often on the pull. The interior consists of two large rooms, handsomely transformed into a coffee-coloured, Moorish venue, with low-slung leather furnishings.

GRAND CAFE & BAR

Sir Terence Conran's latest food-anddrink emporium is housed in the majestic atrium of the historic Royal Exchange building close to the Bank of England. Take drinks in the upper level colonnade or nibble away from the crustacean bar on the floor of the atrium. This is a seriously good addition to London's drinking circuit.

LOUNGELOVER

Two flaming braziers signal the entrance to this former meatprocessing warehouse and, once inside, you are treated to a visually stunning glamourfest of furnishings. This drop-dead gorgeous bar oozes style and the vibe is laid-back yet opportunistic. Fabulous cocktails.

MINT LEAF

A wonderfully friendly team of bar staff keep fun levels high in this stratospherically upmarket Indian bar and restaurant. Many of the cocktail ingredients are purloined from the kitchen, so expect some unique drinks and an excellent range of Indian bar snacks.

SALT

To give it its full name, The Salt Whisky Bar and Dining Room has almost single-handedly raised the standard of whisky drinking in London. More than 250 different styles are offered (including many rare American whiskies and bourbons) in this ultra-modern, ultra-hip environment.

SMOKE

At the Tooting Bec end of Trinity Road, Smoke has been at the epicentre of south London's nightlife since it opened just over a year ago. This two-roomed bar has a buzzing cocktail lounge at the front, and a relaxed eating area at the back serves excellent bar meals.
