Summer blockbusters for the film-loving family

Janie Lawrence previews what's coming to a screen near you.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (PG)
The four Pevenise children find themselves back in Narnia in this very worthy sequel of the second in CS Lewis' series of books. For them it's only a year since they first stepped into the wardrobe but in Narnia 1,300 years have passed in which time its magical creatures have been banished and the rightful heir to the throne Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) has been forced into hiding. If you haven't seen it yet (the film was released on 26 Jun) this Cineworld film of the month is still showing in some cinemas, so this is your last chance.

Kung Fu Panda (PG)
Jack Black is the voice of the big and a bit clumsy Po, a panda who's the biggest fan of Kung Fu around and whose dreams become reality when he gets to study his martial arts alongside his idols. Angelina Jolie is Tigress, Jackie Chan the voice of Monkey and Dustin Hoffman is Shiftu. Journey to the Centre of the Earth 3D (PG)
Brendan Fraser appears to be cornering the male lead in fantasy blockbusters as he also stars in this remake of the classic Jules Verne novel. A science professor he is on an expedition in Iceland with his nephew when they literally stumble upon a thrilling and frightening world deep beneath the earth's surface. Shot entirely in 3D and well worth visiting a 3D screen. Out 11 Jul.

Mamma Mia (PG)
Based on the phenomenally successful stage musical, this film version produced by Mr and Mrs Tom Hanks has an all-star cast headed by Meryl Streep and as the title suggests is packed with singalong Abba hits. Single mother Donna (Streep) runs a small hotel on a Greek island. Her daughter is getting married but, unbeknown to Donna she is also on a quest to find her biological father to walk her up the aisle. Enter three surprise guests and potential candidates (Piers Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard). Check out mamma-mia-themovie.co.uk for a Love Hurts quiz.

WALL.E (u)
700 years in the future and humans have left Earth to be run by WALL.E, a robot. A lonely one at that... until meeting fellow robot, Eve. A comic animation perfect for small children, written and directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo).

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (tbc)
Directed by Gurindha Chadha (Bend it like Beckham) this is the British teenage answer to Clueless. Based on the Louise Rennison books, 15-year-old Georgia Nicolson (Georgia Groome) has two main life aims: to get a "sex-god" for a boyfriend and to throw a brilliant birthday party. Not easy when your father (Alan Davies) still thinks you're a child - "If you haven't noticed, I'm a woman now and I wear a bra" - and the boy you have your eye on has his eye on someone else. Teenage girls will love the one-liners and the natural performance by Groome. Out 18 Jul.

Dark Knight (12A)
The sequel to the excellent Batman Begins and Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale, by far the best ever caped crusader) has to take on a new and dangerous enemy in Gotham City. In what was his last role before he was tragically discovered dead Heath Ledger is The Joker. Joined as always by his faithful butler, Alfred (Michael Caine), Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over from Katie Holmes as Rachel, Bruce Wayne's childhood sweetheart.

Space Chimps (U)
Grandson of the first ever chimp in space, Ham III has no interest in following in his footsteps and jokes his way through Space Academy. When NASA decides to send him and fellow chimps, Luna and Titan, on a rescue mission to a strange and faraway planet he is a reluctant hero until... Witty animation from the people responsible for Shrek.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (12A)
The third in the Mummy franchise, Brendan Fraser returns as explorer Rick O'Connell and Maria Bello (ER) replaces Rachel Weisz as his wife, Evelyn. When their teenage son, Alex (Luke Ford) accidentally wakes up a 2,000-year-old mummy the fun begins. Can the O'Connells stop the evil Chinese Dragon Emperor and his vast terracotta army of undead who are bent on world domination? John Hannah is back as the amusingly clueless brother-in-law, and as usual it's a fun-filled, visual spectacular.

Meet Dave (PG)
He may look like an ordinary guy aka Eddie Murphy but he is in fact a spaceship operated by ¼inch tall human-looking aliens. Cue high jinks as "Dave" tries to adjust to life on earth.

Calling all Star Wars fans, young and old... With George Lucas's blessing come some new animated Star Wars adventures. Expect to see all the old characters, from Skywalker to Obi-Wan Kenobi, along with some brand new heroes and villains.
