There are so many options! Larmandier-Bernier makes very precise, penetrating Chardonnay-dominant champagnes as does Jacquesson. A little softer is Frerejean Freres, which I discovered last year, showing real charm and extra-aged character. I also enjoy Charles Heidsieck and Pol Roger which are richer and more full-bodied, and further up the scale Bollinger’s Grande Année is always a fabulous mouthful. On the pink front - I’ve long been a fan of Billecart-Salmon rosé and latterly Devaux. At the pricey end, I have a long history of enjoying Dom Perignon (1964 my favourite to date) but also appreciate Krug’s austerely dry Grande Cuvée, especially with extra bottle age, and last month enjoyed an amazing tasting at Henri Giraud, whose top barrel-fermented champagnes are magnificent.
