But there are some, for example The Great Taste Awards organised by the Guild of Fine Food, that I believe are a useful recognition of quality. Over 50 days, 405 judges taste hundreds of specialist food and drink products — you could say that getting a Great Taste award is the food equivalent of getting a gong at Cannes Film Festival. Well, this year, there have been gold awards (with assorted star ratings) stamped on some of my favourite things produced in or near London: Hoxton white levain bread (right) from Flour Power City Bakery, Gourmet Toasted Popcorn, wondrous pea and shallot ravioli from COOK and, finally, the liquorice and peppermint tea from Teapigs.
