The Whip - bar review

The buzz: A horse-themed bar above The Running Horse pub near Bond Street Tube. Horsey memorabilia adorns the walls and a big horse whip belonging to the owner’s girlfriend sits pride of place above the bar.

The deal: Juleps are de rigueur, as they’re the main drink at major horse racing event the Kentucky Derby.

Good for: Bankers and horse-lovers alike.

Order: The Whip Julep. Traditional bourbon is swapped for rhubarb-infused vodka and dry gin, making it a cleaner, sharper drink than a traditional mint julep. It comes served in a julep cup and you sip it through the julep strainer on top, adorned with mint and basil leaves that tickle your nose. It’s not on the menu but ask Jimmy the head bartender for a Martinez, an early version of a Martini, made with gin, vermouth, cherry syrup and orange bitters.

By the way: Seats are soon to be labelled with numbers relating to 13 classic cocktails, including a martini, Old Fashioned and margarita. For a surprise, order your seat number and see what they bring you. Such fun!
