Made in the Shade - bar review

What they say: A bar that cares about the details (cocktails are concocted with fresh juices and ice is hand-carved) yet with a laid-back vibe.

What we say: Made in the Shade is named after a Fifties colloquialism meaning things are just perfect and the team behind it has tried to make everything just so. There’s a small suntrap of a garden, mood lighting, one-off gigs, Sunday roasts, soothing tree art on the walls and, most importantly, very good drinks.

Good for: Staff are so friendly it feels like a local pub but the cocktails reveal top mixologist credentials. Go here with friends, for a date or just because it’s Thursday (or Sunday, or Wednesday).

Order: The Young Lady is a brash mingling of Aqua Riva tequila, Blue Curacao, egg white and lemon juice; it’s an aquamarine colour but tastes of sharp oranges. If you go off-menu, staff will ask you for your favourite childhood toy or a colour to inspire a bespoke cocktail just to your liking.

By the way: Stick around and you might catch a free shot from the bartenders, who like getting the clients to try rare and unusual tipples — fine by us.
