The Flouers O'Edinburgh

The Finborough Theatre has a rather full-on season called Scotland Decides/Tha Alba a'taghadh 2014, offering a programme of plays addressing the issue of Scottish independence in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. One highlight is The Flouers O'Edinburgh which has been performed countless times in Scotland since its premiere in 1948 but, until now, has never been produced in an English theatre. It's set in Edinburgh in the mid-18th century, when Girzie Carmichael is faced with the possibility of losing her country estate. She decides to pair off her spirited Scottish niece Kate with a stuck-up and taciturn Scot with an English education. He insists if he is to marry her she must learn “proper English” and Kate begins to dig her heels in. Also check out Little Red Hen (Sep 18) by John McGrath, which recounts the story of a failed bid for independence in 1970s Glasgow. The pub downstairs stocks all the finest Scottish beverages.

King Creosote: From Scotland with Love

Kenny Anderson, aka King Creosote performs a live rendition of his album From Scotland with Love, which also forms a live soundtrack to the documentary of the same name directed by Virginia Heath. The film was made using snippets from the Scottish Screen Archive and depicts the history and struggles of Scotland through the lives of ordinary people.

James Yorkston

Dingwalls, Thu Sep 25

Scot James Yorkston, a member of the Fence collective, will bring his thoughtful, provocative tunes to Camden to launch his latest album, The Cellardyke Recording and Wassailing Company. Expect to see some of the guest vocalists join him on stage, including KT Tunstall, The Pictish Trail, Emma Smith and Alexis Taylor.

Referendum dinner

This Scottish-themed restaurant is inviting unionists and nationalists to break bread together on the night of the referendum. It might make for an awkward night if the menu weren't so absorbing: haggis canapés followed by a Scottish seafood selection, then roast partridge and Aberdeenshire steak, all rounded off with Scottish cheeses and a wee dram of whisky. We'll vote yes to that.
