Google marks St George's Day: here's where to celebrate it in London

Google has has celebrated St George's Day with a Doodle on its homepage but we've got the scoop on where you can enjoy the feast day of England's patron saint.

Londoners tend to use St George's Day (April 23) as an excuse to indulge in all the good things about being English: food, drink, music and traditions. So here's our guide to where to celebrate our dragon-slaying saint in London with feasting, carousing and merriment.

But don't forget the backstory: every year on April 23 we remember the death of Saint George, a fourth century Christian Roman soldier who is said to have slayed a dragon, although as no historical evidence of the dragon — or indeed any dragon — exists, some believe George's beast beating antics to be an exaggeration of the truth.

George was tortured, imprisoned and eventually beheaded when he continued to show faith and courage in the face of the Christian-hating Roman Emperor, so was made a Christian martyr after his death and then, in 1415, the patron saint of England, even though he had no connections to our country.
