Festival styled on a local fete

If the thought of another sodden field and burger-van meal is hampering your enthusiasm for the ongoing festival season, fear not as Field Day in Victoria Park tomorrow takes a novel approach to festival fun.

Promising the simple charms of a village fete, the day-long event boasts bunting, barn dancing, vintage games and hay bales, while food comes in the shape of tempting hog roasts and home-made goodies. And, with a quaint 5,000-person capacity, the queue for the loo should be a little less stressful, too.

Such practicalities aside, the main draw is the unique musical bill. Staid, majorfestival line-ups are passed over in favour of fresh, leftfield acts from London and further afield. The stellar New York avant garde mathrock quartet Battles are definitely worth scheduling into the day's frolicking, as are the equally experimental Archie Bronson Outfit (pictured) and their bluesflecked, growling rock shenanigans. Four Tet (aka Kieran Hebden) brings along his laptop and turntables for some mellow DJ action, alongside rambunctious funsters Zombie Disco Squad and Latin-flecked tunes courtesy of Nottingham's Late Of The Pier.

That Field Day is styled on a local fete rather than the heaving, commercial bandwagon, makes this one offering worth pitching up for.
