Strictly Come Dancing 2015: Tess Daly backs calls for same-sex couples in BBC show

There are no plans for same-sex couples this year, but presenter says 'why not?' in the future

Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess Daly backed calls for the BBC hit show to include same-sex couples.

The mother-of-two, who is married to fellow presenter Vernon Kay, said although it probably will not happen in the next series of Strictly Come Dancing, she said “bring it on” to two men or two women dancing together in the future.

She told Hello! magazine: “It probably won’t happen this year, but in the future, why not?

“It has happened in other countries. In Israel, two female dance partners competed together. What’s more, Strictly is hosted by two women.”

The 46-year-old said she is “lucky” to co-host the programme with Claudia Winkleman who she said is “doing really well” after her daughter suffered an accident last Halloween.

“I’m lucky to work with someone I genuinely care for,” she said of her relationship with Winkleman, 43. “When I’m in London I’ll often pop in to see her for a chat and tea, or just to show her a new pair of shoes. When we go to an event, we get ready at her place.

“Our kids get on well, too. We recently took the girls to see Taylor Swift in concert in Hyde Park and Phoebe and Matilda [two of their daughters] were inseparable, popping in and out of the fun photo booths.”

Last year Winkleman’s nine-year-old daughter suffered serious burns after a candle set fire to her witch’s costume.

Daly said: “It was a hellish time but Matilda is doing really well now. She is a gorgeous little girl with a great sense of humour, just like her mum.”
