This is a theory which - bear with me here - purports there are multiple universes with a range of different outcomes for its inhabitants, depending on their actions, like the growing branches of a tree.
The opposite of this is determinism, which states everything is determined by the action preceding it - i.e. there is no free will, no random events, everything happens for a reason. Or as Forest puts it, "a life on tramlines."
A belief in the latter theory could - with some very, very sophisticated mathematics - enable someone to predict the future. Is this what Devs is up to?
Why does the code make Sergei vomit?
Mystery: What did Sergei see?
BBC/FX Networks/Raymond Liu
Sergei's reaction to the mass of numbers and symbols reminds me of my own reaction to my GCSE maths paper (shout-out to my old teacher Mrs McIntyre, who responded to my bid to get an A with, "and I want a swimming pool in my back garden, honey, but it's not going to happen"), but there's clearly more at stake here than working out the volume of a greenhouse.
Facebook might have been accused of destroying democracy, but imagine the consequences if a tech firm could accurately predict the future - and not just any tech firm, but one run by a man who seems comfortable murdering his own employees.
"If it's true this literally changes everything," says Sergei, to which Devs worker Katie responds: "No, if it's true this changes absolutely nothing." In the most literal sense.
(That's a fancy building, isn't it)
Not a question - but hats off to the set designers of Devs HQ (and, in fact, the design of this entire show) which looks a cross between an architect's wet dream, a spaceship and a luxury Middle Eastern hotel.
(Terrifying) boss: Nick Offerman plays the mysterious CEO

Who is Sergei selling code to?
Before entering Devs, Sergei's Russian background is called into question with a xenophobic line of questioning from Kenton.
But after he goes missing, Lily discovers a password-protected Sudoku app on Sergei's phone and grows suspicious about its contents. Is the app hiding secret information? Or did Sergei just feel really strongly about protecting his Sudoku answers?
Why is there a giant baby in the woods?
Amaya is named after Forest's daughter and the giant doll looming above campus appears to be a pretty unhealthy monument to her - is Amaya dead? Katie hints at a loss when she apologises to Forest for making a "clumsy" analogy about someone's kid getting hurt.
Is Forest a psychopath?
Not necessarily - he feels pretty awful about murdering Sergei. Like everything else in this show, I suspect it's more complicated than that.
Devs airs on BBC Two on Wednesdays at 9pm. Catch up on iPlayer.
