From creating purèe-filled syringes and glove cocktails for avant-garde exhibitions, he moved on to developing his own shows.
His breakthrough came with Peep & Eat, a culinary peep show where the spectator peeks through curtains at the wicked pleasures being created within. The reaction to Peep & Eat summed up what de Bie, who works under the banner of Antwerpbased company Laika, thinks theatre should be all about.
'At one Peep & Eat, five strangers sat together in their cubicle. Now that could be a really embarrassing experience. But the show gave them something to chew over and I bumped into them at 3am in a bar in the city - they were still all together!'
Unsurprisingly, this winning formula has attracted offers to convert the idea into a full-time restaurant, but de Bie is reluctant to venture down the commercial path, relishing instead his role as 'sensory projects' man at Laika, a brief which allows him to dream up new ways of concocting edible theatre.
'I think it's something that we're losing in our pre-packaged way of life, that connection with food, the physical feel of it. We're in danger of losing our senses.'
