Top five prison plays

The human struggle behind bars has inspired varied drama on the stage over the years - here are five of the best examples.

1. Not About Nightingales (1938)

A 'forgotten' Tennessee Williams play, entwining themes of melodrama, sadism and isolation - and focusing on the power-play between a prison governor and belligerent inmate Butch. 'Rescued' from the Williams estate by Vanessa Redgrave, it made its world premiere at the National Theatre in 1999.

2. Fortune And Men's Eyes (1967)

Canadian playwright John Herbert wrote this harrowing piece, about society's treatment of homosexuals and harsh prison conditions, in an era when being gay was still punishable by law. Set in a youth prison, rebellious inmate Queenie is the play's drag-clad star.

3. The Island (1973)

Athol Fugard's South African drama (pictured) centres on Winston and John, cell mates on the notorious Robbin Island. Combining humour and pathos, it's dedicated to the men and women incarcerated for their part in the fight against apartheid. It is currently revived at the Old Vic (020 7369 1722) until April 13.

4. Short Eyes (1972)

New York's notorious 'Tombs' jail system is the backdrop for this work from Nuyorican poet/ playwright Miguel Piñero. The codes and regulations of society on the inside are explored with a mixed-race cast.

5. Kiss Of The Spiderwoman (1990)

Flamboyant musical adaptation of Manuel Puig's 1976 novel. The relationship between imprisoned homosexual Molina and revolutionary Valentin, storming songs and a set design that evoked pure Technicolor fantasy, helped it win the Evening Standard's Best Musical Award in 1992.
