Thoughts of a traumatised psyche

Though his body lies comatose in a hospital bed after a violent attack, Carl (Marc Bolton) believes he has just enjoyed a perfect day with his girlfriend. "It's been good," Catherine (Hayley J Williams) corrects. "'Perfect' is when you share with someone else."

Adapted from Alex Garland's 2004 short novel, this production effects a stirring, dazzlingly vivid depiction of inner life through an elegant intertwining of flickering film projections of images from Carl's memory, flawlessly intimate monologues to audience and fluid, occasionally balletic scenes with excellent supporting actors Williams and David McCaffrey.

The stage becomes the landscape of Carl's traumatised psyche. Carl realises he's in a coma through a series of dislocating experiences: the classics in the bookshop, for example, only consist of pages of their most famous lines.

He can't even get a handle on specifics; where he works, whether he's married. The only niggle with this otherwise excellent piece of drama is that Garland's protagonist gives more exposition on his predicament than is perhaps credible. "Every dream that anyone ever had is theirs alone and they never manage to share it," he pronounces.

For this brilliant production, that's only partly true.
