The Vagina Monologues

American writer Eve Ensler was worried about what people think about vaginas.

So she talked to hundreds of women and created this extraordinary series of monologues out of the interviews. The Vagina Monologues has now been a huge hit all over the world, and I've appeared in it twice - once at the Old Vic as part of a charity performance of the play, and then for another charity event in Madison Square Garden in New York alongside Glenn Close, Jane Fonda and Oprah Winfrey.

It's a brilliant piece of work so it's great news that Eve Ensler is returning to London to perform it again. It spans the range of emotions from really toe-curlingly hilarious personal stuff, to really deep questions. Obviously it's about how women feel about themselves and their sexuality.

But not just funny stuff - there is stuff about childbirth, rape, abuse. What is remarkable is that even though Eve manages to capture or talk about very important, deep issues you never come away from it thinking this is worthy or tub-thumping. Eve never loses the wit and the truth of it, probably because it is inspired by so many real women.

Eve herself is totally inspiring. There are not many women, or not many people full stop, who make you feel you have got to do something with your life, but Eve is one of them.

For years, she's been on a mission. The Vagina Monologues has raised vast amounts of money for organisations working to end violence against women, yet Eve's only motive was to throw some light into some very dark corners.

I think feminism has become unfashionable - women have forgotten how relevant it is today and that feminism has as many faces as there are tones in The Vagina Monologues. Eve has done a really important thing. That's why I had to go to Madison Square Garden. I had to be part of it.
