Gupta's irreverent vision of Asian Salford gains a distinctively realist sheen from director Richard Jones, who was critically damned for his Midsummer Night's Dream at the RSC, but is infamous for such visual coups as the large inflated latex-clad Rhine-maidens he brought to the Royal Opera House, and has been hailed by the National Theatre's artistic director, Nicholas Hytner, as: "One of the most genuinely original and completely individual directors around."
