Then there was the constant moving. During the war, he was evacuated to Luton, then he spent a year in America, followed by Luton, then back to the East End. So the young Steven started dreaming of a way out, of being a strong man or, more vaguely, an actor. Instead he left school at 15 and became a menswear salesman. He did, however, enjoy the work - selling cashmere - and at least it was an honest living. In his early teens, he tried his hand at being a criminal - stealing bikes and selling them down Shoreditch High Street - but a short stay in a detention centre cured him of that ridiculous notion.
