Though they have made few changes directly as a result of September 11, Hoffman says inevitably the play's resonance has intensified: 'Most literally at one point where the guard tells the serial killer he's 'like a plane crash', which now, in rehearsal, has become a crushing, very powerful comment about evil. A lot of plays have moments which now ring truer and deeper and are more unsettling and if theatre is capable of that, then all the better.'
