"This is a very visible business; footballers do it once a week, we do it eight times a week. If I had been born 30 years later, I might have taken the easy option of being a soccer player," says McShane, who inherited his ageless genes from his Manchester United winger father Harry ("he's 80 now but looks 60"). Instead, he played George Best on film in Yesterday's Hero. "If I had been down a pit for 20 years, I would want to retire. But I love this job; it's hard work, but it's not like being at the coalface. You don't stop acting. Actors don't retire," he adds, grinning impudently, "they just lose their scripts." Now he's about to show that a down-to-earth boy can also fly. The mature male totty's time has definitely come. And he's a damned sight better-looking than Tom Jones, too.
