Rainer's comedy is no drag

Few comedians on the circuit get their laughs from classical music. Even fewer get their laughs from classical music at their own monthly soiree based in a Soho drag club complete with octet. You could say that Rainer Hersch has found the ultimate niche for his irreverent orchestral manoeuvres, which embrace songs, parlour games and guest artistes.

In a former life, this likeable livewire was a classical pianist, so he promptly gets a clearly well-worn inter-band gag out of the way. What do his viola player and lightning have in common? Neither hit the same place twice. Other material is more topical. I learnt my scales by Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, not Eat Ground Beef, Die Foaming.

The myth about Hersch is that his fans are all music buffs. Many are, but a listen to Hooked On Classics and the Clockwork Orange soundtrack would suffice. There's more MOR than Ludwig Van here, from Waltzing Matilda to Flight Of The Bumblebee. Hersch resembles a bee himself, buzzing around the stage, his curly black hair hanging down like a bag of discarded crochets.

On this night, guest John Hegley stole the show with his sour poetry and exquisite folky guitar. Hersch is probably more master of ceremonies material than prime-time star, but his loony tunes and engaging wit make for a harmonious night out.
