To date, the company has been largely a family affair. Protestants was written by her father, novelist
Robert Welch, after a conversation with Ulster-born Dormer. 'When you are starting out, you realistically can only work with people who will work for free,' O'Riordan says.
She is also well aware the Protestant-Catholic divide is considerably less significant in London than in sectarian Belfast and Scotland, where the play has already toured. 'I'm terrified of what London will make of it, actually,' she admits.
But then again, England has a sufficiently tortuous ongoing debate about identity for Protestants to strike chords, even without Euro 2004 on the horizon. 'You should see what I've done with the hooligan character,' O'Riordan grins. 'I'm hoping no-one will be able to say: "This means nothing to us".'
