Pricking the celebrity bubble

I met Mike through friends in New York. They knew the Dazzle Dancers - these freaks who dance nude and protest how everything's become boring and lifeless. Mike wrote a a science-fiction comedy for them called Sexotheque. He's obsessed with consumerism, products and advertising - the way we're controlled by our desires. It was hilarious.

Then I saw Please Everything Burst last week. It's very funny. Mike's partner is a Jim Carrey type who does great facial expressions and accents. They point out life's absurdities and the pop culture that we drown in - the dumb diet, people faking accents, cellphones, everyone rushing around when they know how life is over-produced, whereas underneath that pretentious, materialistic crap all we want is love, sex and basics.

He does a brilliant dance act on a chair in the style of Jennifer Lopez, which is hysterical. It's quite wild - they'll have to cut a few things out before they bring it to London. There's a sketch where he finds his lover within himself. I don't know how far he can go with that because it involves him giving himself a blow-job. It's mad.

And there's a girl who's excellent. One moment she's Courtney Love, then she's on a chat show. She's very clever. Mike told me he might change a few bits for London but the basis is three different strands that mould together at the end.

Offstage, he's surprisingly quiet and contained. He's really shy. One of his best mates told me he used to write poetry and needed to be persuaded to perform. He isn't an act really, he's a performance artist. It's monologue and dance but very emotional and personal. I think it should go to TV.
