Poetic dim sum

Past performance outings for Francesca Beard have included stints on London buses, in which she announced she was called Jeremy and was hung like a hamster, as part of the Bus Jam project.

But Chinese Whispers - part of poetry group Apples And Snakes' 21st birthday - is a break from the norm for her: the first time she has incorporated visuals and music

The unifying theme for Beard's 'poetic dim sum' is identity: what makes us who we are, how we perceive ourselves and others.

Surrounded by six television screens and decked out in Maharishi, Beard swerves between subjects as diverse as Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Schrodinger's Cat.

The result is occasionally enlightening and often bewildering as she flits between describing a bout of identity crisis in the supermarket ('the bio-yoghurt has more culture than me', she wails as she confronts the fact she's half-Chinese Malaysian and doesn't speak Chinese) and the death of her pet dog Fluffy.

In between, she ropes the audience into taking part in a questionnaire where we answer individually, but as one person (it's complicated), sings self-penned songs (whose delivery is too muffled) and suggests the basis for a new religion. All with quick-witted linguistic ability, but the result is you come out feeling rather dizzy.
