Plastic fantasy

Gravity is defied in every sense in this playfully surreal evening, where it is possible to see a woman walking across the wall, a man flirting with an elegant foot protruding from his dining table, and a baby doll singing Fly Me To The Moon.

Three men in suits, a girl with blonde corkscrew curls, and a percussionist collaborate on a piece which interchanges human bodies with dolls and tailors' dummies, creating a tantalisingly humorous piece about obsession that defies the visual imagination.

Puzzled? Then picture the initial scene where a man falls into the theatre carrying a pile of bodies - some human, and some mannequins. In an extraordinary theatrical game, it becomes clear that only one actor can be moving across the stage at one time, and in a series of slick acrobatics the other performers demonstrate that they can become like dolls, while the dummies are animated to seem like human beings.

Once this has been established, a series of humorous yet hauntingly elliptical scenes show the three men acting out their very old-fashioned obsession with a girl in a green satin dress. In one scene a man watches her spin rigidly from a low-trapeze with evident sexual excitement, in another she flies from a platform and spurns all boyish admirers.

This is a world of Alice In Wonderland mysteries and flirtatious acrobatics, accompanied charismatically by a soundtrack suited to a smoke-filled club in the late Forties. Exquisitely off-beat, Taylor's Dummies is a delicious treat for summer imaginations.
