No Distance left to run

I like the Almeida a great deal - this is the third play I've done there and the third time I've worked with artistic director Jonathan Kent.

They provide a great space - and afford you their trust. That's not rare in the theatre, but having done film for a few years, I'm used to people who give you less tether because you're playing with a lot more mone. The difference between working on a amovie and being set free in the theatre is great. It feels safe. And now, also very homey.

The Distance From Here is a story about three teenagers, and one of the teenagers' family circle. A hidden past erupts over the course of a couple of days and obliterates their friendships and family. It touches on, not necessarily my own life, but the people I grew up around.

I was talking about directing the play myself, but we filmed a play I did at the Almeida last year - The Shape Of Things - and we got the go-ahead to release it, so I had to double-back and do that. David Leveaux is directing, and I knew his work so was more than happy to have him do it. I've just met the cast for the first time - and he's rounded up a really beautiful group of people.

I see everything as film material - I do the writing and later they end up on the stage or the screen. I moved into film a lot later than stage. I'm enjoying the time in film, but I love the process in theatre. I'm adapting a book next, and am in talks to possibly do a remake of The Wicker Man from the Seventies, as well as working on a couple of new plays. So I keep myself busy.
