Modern Hercules hits with a myth

Nineties duo Stewart Lee and Richard Herring arrived just after the comedy-as-rock-and-roll charabanc left town and never quite received the mainstream acclaim they deserved.

In recent years there has been a late, separate flowering. Lee co-wrote Jerry Springer - The Opera, while Herring's Vagina Monologues retort, Talking Cock, has been performed around the world.

Herring's latest work is part-catharsis, part-madcap stunt. The Twelve Tasks Of Hercules Terrace charts his attempts to get his life back on track after hitting the twin buffers of a painful break-up and early mid-life crisis.

He set out to emulate the feats of Hercules. His dozen updated challenges were not all successful, but his slide-assisted, self-mocking account is triumphantly funny.

When this intelligently frivolous set premiered in Edinburgh last summer, Herring had to cram everything into an hour. Here his exploits, including stealing Germaine Greer's bra, staggering through the London Marathon and hitting a female rower with an oar during a celebrity Boat Race, have space to breathe and are richer for it.

His ultimate Dave Gormanesque endurance feat, going on 50 dates in 50 consecutive nights, could have been a show in itself and still feels a little tossed away. But while other acts run out of steam too easily, it is refreshing to see one that packs plenty of narrative punch. Where else can Greek gods and Loch Ness Monster-slaying rub shoulders with joyous schoolboy gags?
