'This is completely brilliant,' bellowed my nine-year-old above the cacophony. 'Wicked,' raved his older brother, confirming my long-held belief that young boys have absolutely no taste.

The plot of We Will Rock You is mind-bogglingly awful and so brain-achingly contrived to fit the Queen songs - the hero is called Galileo Figaro, his fellow rebel is Scaramouche and the baddy is, you guessed it, Killer Queen. It is very hard not to laugh at the most inappropriate moments.

Yet the children absolutely loved it. They saw nothing odd about watching a musical set in a future where live music is banned and instruments buried - there is only live music and the instruments are very much above ground - and swallowed the idea of Planet Mall circa 2023, where citizens are cloned and 'All we hear is internet ga ga'.

They relished the bizarre plot which involved an ageing hippie played by Nigel Planer, from The Young Ones, leading Galileo and his 'chick' to freedom and music, via an encounter with the Bohemians who live in the rubble of Tottenham Court Road Tube station. They also loved Ben Elton's schoolboy humour, which peppers the show. Best for die-hard Queen fans, the hard of hearing and pre-teen boys. Long-suffering parents can take their children for free on Fri 30 Aug - the last day of Kids Week, the annual event to encourage young theatre-goers. A child aged 5-16 goes free when accompanied by a full paying adult, and up to two additional children's tickets can be purchased at half price.
