'It's funny,' Law says, 'that people perceive me as a film actor, because I perceive myself, well, as an actor.' One, indeed, who speaks perhaps of one day tackling not just Hamlet ('I re-read it recently - it's such a great part') but also Macbeth and Lear. This is one performer who's in the profession for the long haul, and for all the right reasons, for whom fame seems to represent an ever-widening choice. Perhaps that's why he looks taken aback when I tell him that, apparently, there have been worried calls to the Young Vic switchboard asking whether Jude Law is doing all the Faustus performances, even matinees. 'Really?' he says, looking bemused. 'I don't have an understudy. And this, for me, is the essence of being an actor.' Fretful callers can relax. Jude Law will be there.
