Henshall - Home and Singing!

I'm a bit of a gypsy, I have to say. But having spent the past two-and-a-half years living in Manhattan, I came back to England just to do Peggy Sue Got Married.

I hadn't seen the 1986 film - with Kathleen Turner as Peggy Sue, a woman on the edge of a midlife breakdown - so I went out and rented it. Then I read the script and heard the music, and I couldn't resist. It has so much heart, and it's an era that people adore.

Bob Gaudio, the composer, wrote the hits of that time such as "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" and "Walk Like A Man" - and I'm a huge, huge fan. The basic story is the same as the film - the script is by the same duo [Arlene Sarner and Jerry Leichtling] - but when you add music and dance, the choreography of the Fifties and Sixties, it's like getting time-warped.

I've not headlined a musical on my own before, and one thought did occur to me: I suddenly said to myself, "Oh, goodness, I don't have a failsafe - somebody to lean on." But I'm working with some amazing people, including Andrew Kennedy in Nicolas Cage's screen part as Charlie, Peggy Sue's husband of 25 years.

What happens is that at 42, Peggy Sue discovers her husband has had an affair, and it makes her go back to when she was 17 in high school - it's that thing of, if you could live your life again would you do anything differently? Do you have any regrets?

I know people who have regrets, but at 34 I don't. In fact, I couldn't be happier about doing this show at this stage in my life.
