Harrelson heads for West End

Woody Harrelson, who recently spent a night in the cells after allegedly going "berserk" in a London taxi, is the latest US star to debut on the West End stage.

Harrelson, 40, will share billing with Sex And The City star Kyle Maclachlan in a new play On An Average Day.

They play brothers meeting for the first time in 15 years - and with more than a few "issues" to resolve.

Harrelson, who started out on Broadway before shooting to fame as the barman Woody in Cheers, said: "I have always dreamed of acting in the West End. Historically, there is so much here.

"Theatre was my first passion and I thought Broadway was always going to be my thing - but I kinda got distracted. "

The show will open at the Comedy Theatre, with preview performances from 25 July - five days after the hit show Noises Off closes before embarking on a national tour.

Maclachlan, who plays Trey in Sex And The City, has not appeared on stage since the late Eighties. "There is nothing better in this job than being on stage," he said. "I have a good window of time away from filming, too - although I will be going back for one day of Sex And The City."

The 43-year-old, who starred in Twin Peaks, will be joined by his new wife Desiree Gruber later this week. "She's being a real good sport because we had plans to hang out in New York this summer," he said.

Harrelson, who is soon to appear as a cross-dresser in the film Anger Management, was accused of mismanaging his temper earlier this month.

After the alleged incident in a taxi, he spent a night at Belgravia police station. He will answer bail on Monday, when he is likely to discover if he is to be charged.
