Going out on a limb

Nothing pleases Celeste Dandeker more than when the CandoCo Dance Company picks up a review - good or bad - which doesn't mention that her dancers are minus the odd limb or two.

Over the company's ten odd years, Dandeker has determined that CandoCo should be judged on its artistic merits, not patronised as a disabled dance outfit.

Dandeker's own time with London Contemporary Dance Theatre was cut short by a fall in rehearsal and her background at the top of her profession has strengthened her resolve that it's dance that comes first and disability second. Proof positive comes in the decision to commission choreographers from the cutting edge of contemporary dance, whether or not they've worked with disabled performers before.

Rising to the challenge in the company's latest triple bill are new works from Javier de Frutos, Fin Walker and Jamie Watton, all of whom have featured in Dance Umbrella, and with their own companies. How each responds to the particular movement potential of the company's remarkable performers - you haven't lived until you've seen a wheelchair tango - is the strange magic of the CandoCo world.
