Fast test for MTV minds

Panic attacks, Paradise Lost, caffeine culture and Aboriginal dreams are just some of the fast-moving components in a piece of theatre that dizzily investigates a world marching to the beat of the nanosecond.

Filter is a young company that positively pulsates with ingenuity and talent, and its glorious "how about a Jules et Jim-style love triangle in our frenetic modern age?" might best be described as a brief his-and-her story of time.

Faster - inspired by popular science writer James Gleick's book of the same name - dances from one elliptical scene to another, playfully bombarding the audience with images ranging from Roman road-building techniques to a glorious improvised send-up of this year's Turner Prize. Ironically, despite its sympathetic portrayal of Will Adamsdale's wistfully poetic artist - as opposed to Ferdy Roberts's adrenaline arrogant addict - its structure apes the hyperactive pace most readily appreciated by MTV minds.

A young audience whooped and cheered through an evening that pays tribute both to Robert Lepage and Complicite, yet also asserts its own style in a live soundscape where a guitar, bongoes and two keyboards provide sound effects for actions even as trivial as doing up buttons. This show has taken giant steps since it originated at the BAC, and its wit, charm and lightly worn intelligence mark Filter as a very exciting developing company.

Those who have world enough and time should hurry immediately to Hammersmith. A blast - not from the past - but from the future.
