Scher's conversational style - fastpaced, flamboyant and peppered with exclamation marks - owes a lot to her roots. No one can talk like a Jewish Irishwoman, she laughs - it's in the genes, twice over. Her phone continually rings, the doorbell goes, people wander in and out of the kitchen, and all the time Scher is talking, yelling out endearments and instructions to her 23-year-old son, John, asking questions, waiting a second, and then answering them herself, barely drawing breath.
