Duo deliver an Oscar-winner

It takes a brave soul to mess with what is probably the finest comedy in the English language, but the Ridiculusmus duo of Jon Haynes and David Woods aren't the sort of chaps to shirk from their mission to push the boundaries of theatre.

But mess with the Oscar Wilde classic they have - together with director Jude Kelly filleting and slightly mangling the text, so that it is stripped of its impregnable glittering surface to reveal darker undercurrents of vitriol, peevishness and sexuality. In addition, the two men play all the characters.

While most of the famous aphorisms have been retained, the familiar singsong rhythms and internal balance of such well-loved lines have been lost in favour of a flatter more naturalistic and modern sound.

Look around Zoë Atkinson's crazy set of bookshelves, screens and cupboards, all covered in a riot of clashing Victorian floral fabric, and there lurks a fridge, a mini-hi-fi and Tetley teabags.

The characters are rather skewed, too. Jack Worthing is given to curling up foetus-like on the floor, while the Rev Chasuble has something dodgy going on under his surplice, and ward Cecily (the taller Woods hilarious in frills and the same terrible wig he sports as Jack) is clearly at that sulky, awkward age - and looking scary with a carving knife.

It is, however, the neat doubling and trebling and switching of roles and costumes - all praise to the miracle that is Velcro - and ham acting that drives the evening. As it becomes increasingly hectic and clunky, there is just a hint of Morecambe and Wise.

While this is all, for the most part, endearingly goofy, Ridiculusmus reveal a purpose in twisting Wilde's subtitle to make this a "trivial comedy performed by two serious people".

The strong sexual element and the constant cross-dressing bring out an ambiguity of which Wilde would surely have approved. In comedy, such is the importance of being earnest.
