Rehearsals for To The Green Fields have just begun. The play will begin previewing on 14 September and run until 25 November.
Like Mendes, Scott is still considering his next film. He lost the major role of Wolverine in the new hit movie X-Men due to delays making M:I2 and a shoulder injury suffered during a stunt for the film.
He has just finished the film Enigma, in which he plays codebreaker Tom Jericho. Directed by Michael Apted and produced by Mick Jagger, it also stars Kate Winslet and Saffron Burrows.
The rise of Scott, whose last stint on the London stage was in 1993 in Unidentified Human Remains, has been fairly rapid.
He served his term in television in the likes of Taggart, Stay Lucky and Soldier, Soldier before transferring to the big screen in Regeneration and roles in Deep Impact and Ever After.
Scott, the youngest of four children, comes from a relatively impoverished background. He grew up on a Glenrothes council estate, an upbringing of which he is proud.
He says: "It provides you with a steel skin when you have to get your hands dirty . . . film acting is not a clean business."
