Disney play draws on American paranoia

In 1941, Walt Disney Studios were disrupted by a union-organised strike. So great was the fear it engendered that Walt Disney agreed to spy on union activity for the FBI among his own workforce in Hollywood.

Ten years later, America was in the grip of another paranoia as the McCarthy era gathered full pace. In this new play, Justin Sherin brings the events of 1941 forward to 1952, setting the action in a Disney studio where two writers have got wind of Walt's FBI collaboration and are plotting to find out what their boss knows.

Decent new writing on the Fringe is rare these days, which only makes this play by former Fringe First winners Spankin' Yanks all the more impressive.

As union activist Harris tries to persuade Finch, who has just returned to work after a stint in rehab for alcoholism, that Walt is about to name names, the play becomes a riveting examination of the slippery nature of trust within a culture of suspicion where everyone has something to hide.

Sherin cleverly locks his claustrophobic play within a very specific moment in time which allows it to take on a far wider resonance. All three actors, including Finch's girlfriend Grace, are excellent, and although the writing is a bit verbose, its ideas and energy sparkle.
