Disability, with humour attached

Laurence Clark, who has cerebral palsy, is a seasoned member of the disability movement's militant tendency. In recent years, however, he has shrewdly employed comedy to sweeten his worthy pill. His current touring show, The Jim Davidson Guide To Equality, is a skilful polemic nailing prejudice, ignorance and political hypocrisy.

His initial inspiration is the shooting-fish-in-a-barrel bigotry of Davidson, who makes UKIP look like the loony Left, but he swiftly expands his argument to tackle Tony Blair. With the aid of archive clips he rattles through New Labour's broken pledges. Pride of place is a telling shot of the PM ignoring wheelchair-user Clark during a meeting.

The humour comes from his regular Kafka-esque encounters with officialdom. As he angrily points out, Jeffrey Archer got free prison care, while he has to pay someone to take him to the toilet.

Most memorably, Clark recalls a visit to Durham Cathedral where he was shunted into a special safe area - surrounded by lit candles.

Footage of satirically applied piecharts and statistics lends proceedings the tone of a lecture, but as lectures go this is irreverent, pertinent and that rarest of things - a humorous hour that leaves you looking at the world in a different light.
